Following our critically acclaimed play, The Butcher’s Bill by Ken Reay, Canny Craic Theatre Co are delighted to be able to offer an insight into the life and times of people both serving and at home during World War 1. Using Heritage Lottery Funding we are able to bring sessions into schools, libraries and community groups free of charge.
Using authentic letters sent to and from the trenches, India and Turkey we can build up a picture of those who have enlisted; why they enlisted and how they found themselves in the thick of it. The peer pressure, the family pressure, jingoism, nationalism and propaganda. We have two serving soldiers; an officer and a private with different views and standpoints, but not always as expected.
We also look at the lives of women, some left behind, some serving as Army Auxiliary personnel or nursing staff. Their lives changed as much as their loved ones.
Although a serious subject our characters maintain a sense of humour to allow the participants some lighter moments. We have three scenes of approximately 10 minutes with a Q&A session between each scene. The professional actors will answer any question in role, we also have facilitators on hand for more tricky questions.
The sessions run from 29th October finishing at The Word on 11th November 2018. If anyone is interested in hosting a session please contact either Val or Ken.
We are also offering talks about Letters and Post during WW1, the facts and figures are interesting but the letters and stories behind them are fascinating. If any groups would like a speaker to come along the talks last around 45 minutes, the dates for the talks are more flexible starting from 24th September through to Christmas.
If anyone is interested either session please contact us
